According to a Biographical History of Johnson and Hill Counties, Texas
published by the Lewis Publishing Co. of Chicago in 1892, my great
grandfather John HainesYoung first married Helen Davis, b. in AL in 1854.
She was the daughter of Hon.M.L. and Lovenia (Ray) Davis. Helen died 4
months after they were married. He then married my great grandmother Harriet
L. Davis b.1861. She was Helen's sister. They had 9 children of which my
grandmother Harriet Young Brown was one.

I was more than surprised to find Minerva Ellen Davis listed as the Davis'
only child. It also stated that she married John R. Young. These seem to be
different people, but all connected to both the Davis and Young families.
Can you be of any help?

Email from K R Squier dated 8 Feb 2003:
I attempted to send an email to your Minerva/John ? Young source. It w
reurned. I then did more research on my own and have found the 6/7 children
that lived into adulthood of Micajah.C. Davis and wife Lavinia Ray. Th
appear in the 1850,1860 and 1870 census records. Butch Saunder confirmed
this along with page numbers etc. which support the Hill Cty. Historical
Biography and obituary of which I have copies.
The children in 1870 were listed as:
Susan F. 17FW
Helen D 14FW
Alice 12FW
Minerva E. 10FW
Harriet L. 8FW
In 1860 the following were listed:
Mary E. 14
John H. 12
Sarah J? 9F AL
Susan F. 7F
Helen 5
Alice 3
Eleanor 1

I believe that John ?Young was married to Minerva E. and that they had a
child Johnnie, but at this time Minerva is not part of my research. If you
have any information which may be of value to me I would appreciate it. I am
currently staying this winter in Durham, NC, with a daughter and plan to go
to the Catholic Presbyterian Cemetery some time in the next few weeks. On my
return home, I am looking to stop in both AL and MS.

Phil Lindsey was kind enough to send me some pages from a book of the Surry Co. NC Court Minutes 1768-1789 Vol 1-2, published by Southern Historical Press. The book gives a view of what was going on there during that time. Surry Co. covered a large area of NC at the time. Most of the area on the north was in the mountains. Many entries in the records dealt with bounties on wolves and wildcats. I'm sure these animals made large dents in the domesticated farm animal herds. Apparently men from all parts of the county were called as jurors - but Carlton was the only one of his family of age at the time, so his name appeared often. Witnesses to jury trials were also given mileage and per-diem, was can possibly be used to tell how far away from the courthouse they lived. Carlton Lindsey's name was usually spelled "Carlton" but his last name was usually "Lindsay." The court house listed was located at Richmond, but I have not located that place yet. I don't have all pages of this book, so it's not possible to say all of the courts were held there. There also seems a close association with the Holcomb family. The connection to the Holcomb family is found through the Durham family. George Durham (b.c.1715-20, d.1766 Brunswick VA) m. Winifred Lindsey c.1740-50. His daughter Margaret Durham m. probably Thomas Holcomb. Carlton's descendants should look carefully at this relationship. Did some of the Holcombs go to SC? I am surprised Carlton's name is not found in the Surry Co. tax records. He was certainly old enough to pay at least a poll tax. Or is it we have only seen the land tax and not poll tax records. Following is a record of what was sent by Phil:

2-14-1783 - Juror: Carlton Lindsey. Had to be age 21, so this pushes his birth year back to 1761 or before.
5-15-1783 - Jurors: Carlton Lindsey, George Holcombe, and Phil Holcombe.
5-16-1783 - Jurors: Carlton Lindsey, George Holcombe.
1784 (could not tell exact date - on previous page that was not sent)
Abner Greenwood vs. William Johnson -witness Philemon Holcomb for pltf.
76 miles, 11 days, Carlton Lindsey 72 miles, 10 days.
4-15-1785 - Jurors Carlton Lindsay, Philip Holcomb
5-14-1785 - John Randleman vs. John Sutton, wit. for pltf. Carlton Lindsay 36m-4d
8-9-1785 - Airs Hudspeth vs Daniel Bailey - wits. for pltf. - George Holcomb 96m-14d, Carlton Lindsey 144m-30d.
2-17-1786 - Philemon Holcomb vs. Thomas Burnet - wit. for pltf. - Carlton Lindsay 240m-30d.
5-11-1786 - deed John Bohannon to Airs Hudspeth - oath Carlton Lindsay.
2-14-1787 - deed Henry Speer to Carlton Lindsay - oath sd. Speer.
2-15-1787 - Philemon Holcomb vs Wm. Rutledge and Joseph Bradley - wits. Geo. Holcomb 274m-45d, Carlton Lindsey 274m-48d.
3-1787 - Carlton Lindsay to have leave to build water grist mill on Swisher's Creek to be deemed public mill.
5-1787 - Wm. Shepard, assignee of Becket Nichols and Phil Holcomb - find for pltf. - Wit. for pltf. Carlton Lindsay 100m-20d.
1787 - Philemon Holcomb listed with too much land in Sander's District.
11-13-1787 - deed from Carlton Lindsay to James Lindsay acknowledged.
11-15-1787 - State vs. Carlton Lindsay - not guilty. State vs. Philemon Holcomb - not guilty. State vs. Carlton Lindsey - guilty. The same jury was involved in all three cases. It appears there may have been more than one charge against Carlton Lindsey and one of them involved Holcomb.
11-17-1787 - Henry Speer vs Carlton Lindsay - deft. came into court and acknowledged if he said disrespectful things of Capt. Speer's character, he does not remember for he had no cause to say such - suit discontinued.
2-15-1788 - Jacob Ballinger vs Phil Holcomb and Carlton Lindsay - no judgement noted.
8-12-1788 - deeds from Jame Lindsay to Th. Wiles (oath John Blalock), James Lindsay and wife to John Bittick (oath John Durham), James Lindsay to John Durham (oath John Bittick), Thomas Holcomb exempt from paying poll tax in future.
8-16-1788 - claim paid to Jeffery Johnson for keeping guard with 3 men over C. Lindsay. Someone was worried Carlton was going to commit a violent act or was going to try to escape. This led to his father posting bond with all of his land and then losing it when Carlton did not show up in court. This was the last record of this Lindsey family in Surry Co. - they must have fled to SC very soon after.

If this is the right couple, then James may have had an earlier wife, given that Amanda was apparently born in 1858.

From _A Place Called Belmont_ by Jerry Martin, c1978, printed by the Itawamba County Times:

"Two of the very first white settlers around here were Micajah C. Lindsey (1775-1845) and his wife, Elizabeth McClurkin Lindsey. They lived, reportedly, in the vicinity of the present Lindsey Cemetery among the hunting Chickasaws before the indian Removal. After the land office opened at Pontotoc, Micajah entered in excess of 3,000 acres of land in a matter of a few years. In March 1840, he sold seven various quarter sections of land to William Carroll Lindsey, his son, for $2,500. Micajah Lindsey died in 1845, probably the first person buried in the present Lindsey Cemetery between Belmont and Dennis.

...Daughters of Micajah and Elizabeth Lindsey were Jane (Mrs. Matthew Davis), Mary (Mrs.David Franklin), and Elizabeth (Mrs. John Joel). James Lindsey, Holland Lindsey, Bazzle L. Lindsey were also sons of Micajah."

email from Robert Jordan dated 6 July 2002:
Hello Margaret - haven't talked to you for awhile, but I'm still looking for early Lindsey evidence. Below is my list of Micajah's Christian Co. KY tax records. Hope this will add a little info to your records. The numbers on the end mean (1) number of tax polls over 21, (2-3) number of slaves over/under 16, (4) number of horses/mules. There might be a land deed or patent for him somewhere, but I haven't seen one. Often, when men left an area, they just turned their property over to relatives - without a deed.

Christian Co. KY tax list shows Micajah moved to KY by 1809 with probable brother Carlton. He may have stayed one year, then moved for two years before he returned. He moved again in 1813 and returned one year before moving to Alabama in 1815.

Micaja Lindsey 1 5 1 2

As listed in _Residents of the Southeastern Mississippi Territory; Census, Tax Rolls, and Petitions Book One_, by Jean Strickland & Patricia N. Edwards, 1995:
1815-1817 Monroe County, Mississippi Territory State Census, p 148
Micaja Lindsey 1 5 1 2 9 0 0 9
where the numbers refer to: WM>=21 (1) , WM<21 (5), WF>=21 (1), WF<21 (2). Tot W (9), Tot "free people of color" (0), Tot slaves (0), Total inhabitants (9)
Thus the household consisted of 1 male over 21, 1 female over 21, 5 boys and 2 girls under 21. No slaves of other non-white inhabitants. We have James, Basel, Holland and possibly William Carrol as boys under 21, and Jane and Mary as girls under 21 at that time. So we're missing a boy.

The names just above and below Micajah's on this census are: Caleb, James and Martin Fryly, Andrew Pucket, John Wood, Joseph Thompson, Zach Taylor, James Barnes, Duncan Johnson.

On the website http://www.intersurf.com/~rcollins/mcwms.html there is a will of a Andrew M McWilliams, who died 6 Oct 1823 in Jefferson Co. AL. At the time of probate, a Micajah Lindsey was one of those bound to oversee the administration of the estate, as far as I can tell from the wording.

This is too early to be any of the grandsons named Micajah, so is most likely our Micajah C. Lindsey.

All about the same time of the following Jefferson County Lindsey marriages:

James Lindsey and Rachel Franklin 6 Jan 1821
Jane Lindsey and Matthew Davis 28 Jan 1822
Mary Lindsey and avid Franklin 3 Jan 1821

SO, this probably is "our" Micajah Lindsey. Need to figure out where the McWilliams folks and Andrew Wilson lived, since Micajah was probably not far away.

From Old Huntsville Land Office Records
1819 Micajah Lindsey cert. for 17S R5W Sec 28
Land was in Blount County at the time, now Jefferson County.

In the 1880s 11/16 of the section was sold under the Homestead Act:
NW 1/4Louisa J Penwell 10 Mar 1886
NW 1/4 SE 1/4 Roland B Eaton 21 Nov 1889
E 1/2 SE 1/4 ""
NE 1/4 SW 1/4 ""
NE 1/4Thomas H Palmer 20 Mar 1884

By this time the land was in Jefferson County.

Does this mean Micajah had the SW 1/4 of the section, or some part thereof? At the time, 160 acres was the smallest parcel one could buy, I think.

Need to recheck Jefferson County deeds, and also check Blount County deeds, to see if and when he sold the land, or passed it on to an heir.

From Bob Jordan's "Lindsey Book":
At the present time, John Lindsey has been traced to 1800 Rutherford Co. NC. Deed, census, and tax records have traced his move to Warren Co. KY in 1809, with his probable brother Caleb Lindsey. Tax records showed he moved to Grayson Co. KY about 1820. He then moved to Butler Co. KY in 1824 and stayed only a few years. Apparently, the two oldest sons of Caleb and John left KY for the Indiana Illinois area in 1828 to explore land opportunities. Caleb and John's families then moved up the road to Spencer Co. IN (about a three day ride) in 1829. This is where the two brothers split. Caleb took his family down the Ohio River to a landing in Illinois where he settled in Jackson County. Many of John's sons returned to Butler Co. KY after John died. Perhaps the climate and fanning opportunities were not good in Spencer Co., but I have a feeling they just longed for the home turf of their younger, perhaps happier years. Other sons of John stayed in Spencer Co., IN. That is why I was born in Indiana.
We know John Lindsey married a Terry (?) by 1800. John Lindsey was located in the 1800 Rutherford Co. census with no children. His first child was born 1801, so John was probably married just before the census was taken in late 1799 or early 1800. After John died in 1837, his wife Terry Lindsey was listed in the 1840 census of Spencer Co. IN. One deed record in Butler Co. KY in 1826 listed John's wife as Terry also. Then on the death certificate of James Lindsey, their son, mentioned her name as Therisa no maiden name. The marriage could have taken place in either Spartanburg Co. SC or Rutherford Co. NC. The different family members are each noted by a number. For instance, John Lindsey's number is 1. His first born is 11, and his second born is 12. The first born of 11 is 111, and the first born of 12 is 121. This may be a little clumsy because as the number of generations increase, the larger an individual's number becomes, but we can also quickly find the relationship between generations from one person to another."

Grave stone found by Kenneth Lindsey 1972 Oak Hill Cemetery. The stone was not found by this author on a trip there in 1974. Age brackets in census records below show John was born 1775 80.

1800 Rutherford Co. NC page 125 (alphabetical): John Lindsey 00100 00100. Shows age 16 26 and wife same age bracket, no children thus married 1799 1800 and born 1774 84.

John Lindsey moved to Warren Co. KY by August, 1808, proved by the birth of their son James Lindsey. James' birthplace was always listed in the census records as Kentucky.

Warren Co. KY Tax lists: Caleb Lindsey first appeared 1809 with 122a on Green River, which had been patented by J. Lambert. He had one tax poll 21 or over, none under 21, none 16 21, 2 horses and no slaves. There was no tax book for 1810, but in 1811 John Lindsey appeared with the same 122a and exactly the same "other" information. This was an original patent by J. Lambert. It is not clear if Caleb gave the land to John, allowed him to use the land as long as he paid tax, or if John's name was John Caleb Lindsey. Census records do show both Caleb and John in 1810 Warren Co. John was also taxed for another 100a which had been patented by Philip Jones. John was not taxed on the extra 100a in 1812. The 122a was listed as entered by J. Lambert and patented by Philip Jones. Deed records show the 100a was sold by Caleb (of Grayson Co.) to David Simmons (on Little Beaver Dam). The 122a was taxed under John's name through 1819. The 100a was probably taxed under Simmons’ name. In 1819, John was also shown as being taxed on 305a in Grayson Co. on Bar (Bear?) Creek, which proves where he went.

1810 Warren Co. KY page 253 John Lindsey: 20010 20010 = males under 10=2, males 26 45=1; females under 10=2, 26 45= 1. Thus born 1775 1794. Census neighbors were Andrew Stice, Reuben Alexander, Robert Stice, Hezekiel Haines, Nathaniel Harrington, Henry Bruce, Henry Warren, Sam Foster, and John Hightower.

1820 John disappeared from Warren Co. tax records. John moves to Grayson Co. KY 1816, but poll tax was paid in both counties between 1816 19. The same land appears on both tax records so this gives continuity toward the proof this is the same person.

Hi John,
Thank you for the birth and death dates and places for Aaron Manship Williams. I don't have any more information on Margaret OVERCAST WILLIAMS, except that she was born abt 1815 in NC...according to the 1850 Tippah Co., MS census. Her sister, Esther OVERCAST, was living with Aaron and Margaret in the 1850 census. This is what I have on their children (Belinda Caroline WILLIAMS LINDSEY was my g.grandmother):
1.Tansey J. b. abt 1835 in AL
2.Thomas W. b. abt 1837 in AL
3.James M. b. abt 1842 in AL
4.Julia A. b. abt 1843 in AL
5.Sarah Ansalane b. 24 Jun 1846 in MS m. John Micajah Lindsey 7 Apr 1869 in MS, d. 8 Feb 1908

7.George A. b. abt 1851 in MS
8.E.J. (female) b. abt 1853 in MS, I strongly believe her name was Elizabeth

Most of the above information comes from the 1850 & 1860 census' and from Bible Records.

Thank you again for the dates, any help is greatly appreciated.
